According to the International Bottled Water Association, in 2007, the U.S. consumed approximately 8.8 billion gallons of bottled water. This means that U.S. residents drank more bottled water than any other beverage aside from carbonated soft drinks. As the consumption of bottled water continues to increase, so do the negative environmental consequences that are associated with it.

Through persuasive commercialization and marketing, bottled water companies have convinced the general public that drinking bottled water is better than drinking tap water.  However, how can bottled water be better than tap water when it is estimated that 40% of all bottled water comes from tap water sources? In fact, major bottled water brands like Aquafina and Dasani have admitted they use tap water.  Is bottled water really better than tap water?
